Baytown Sterling won both the boys and girls events at this weekend's TISCA ...
... Texas State High School Water Polo Championships hosted by Northside ISD in San Antonio.
In the girls competition, Sterling was dominant in their fourth consecutive championship game appearance and became winners of three state championships in a row by defeating Houston Stratford 15-5. Statford finished as runner-up for the second consecutive year and Denton Ryan placed third. Amy Olsen of Sterling repeated her All-State MVP award from 2009. Coaches TJ Markiewicz of Sterling and Mike Hoskovec of Stratford shared the 'Coach of the Year' award. The last and only other girls team to win at least three in a row was San Antonio Clark (4 from 1983-1986). This was Sterling's sixth girls overall state championship.
In the boys competition, Sterling edged Tomball by a single goal, 13-12, in a close back and forth game with the winning goal coming with 18 seconds remaining in the game. It was Sterling's third consecutive championship game appearance, winning two of three. St. Mark's, the defending champion, placed third after missing the final by losing to Tomball by one goal in the semi-finals. Chad Colin of Tomball was named All-State MVP and Tomball coach, Scott Slay, won the 'Coach of the Year' award. This was also the Sterling boy's sixth overall state championship.
